The Miracle of Peace in Chaos

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7

The moment I saw my mom being rolled into the emergency room, a wave of familiarity washed over me. It wasn't a warm familiarity, it was the cold, sterile memory of trauma. The hospital setting, the specific antiseptic smells, and that nonstop, static beeping sound from the monitors—it all transported me back to six years ago.

But this time, something was different.

I was calmer. It wasn’t because I had everything handled, or because I knew everything would be okay. In fact, it was quite the opposite. A stroke brings unpredictable consequences; the aftermath is a blur of unknowns. The calm came because I realized I didn’t have control—a kind of finding peace in chaos I had never experienced before.

In that moment of realization, I didn't fight. I chose surrender. I essentially said, "Whatever, God. I have no control here, but You do".

Choosing Joy Over Self-Pity

My mother was hospitalized for about a week to recover. As Christmas drew closer, the pressure mounted. I had a prior commitment to join a choir I had been practicing with for months, but with everything going on, my first instinct was to skip it.

I wanted to retreat. I wanted to wallow. But I remembered how miserable I used to be when I allowed myself to sink into self-pity. So, regardless of the exhaustion and the worry, I pushed myself to show up.

These days, the world talks constantly about the search for happiness. We chase it through achievements, purchases, and perfect moments. But what we truly need isn't fleeting happiness, it is Joy. Joy is subtle. It is consistent. It is a state of contentment that lasts regardless of your external circumstances.

Happiness is earned, Joy is a gift.

The Shift

The moment I stood with the choir and we began to sing "Joy to the World"—a song I have sung my entire life—the lyrics finally hit home. Suddenly, I didn't just hear the melody; I felt the joy.

Something inside me shifted. The panic didn't rise. I wasn't spiraling into fear or drowning in anxiety. In that moment, I felt Peace—another layer of finding peace in chaos that felt almost supernatural.

It was an unexplainable, illogical, supernatural peace. It didn't make sense on paper, but it was real. The storm around me hadn't stopped—my mom was still recovering, life was still messy—but I wasn’t storming anymore.

God showed me a profound truth that day: Peace isn’t the absence of chaos. Peace is God’s presence inside of it.

A New Reaction

Because of this peace, I faced triggers differently this year.

  • Harsh words from others? They didn't break me like they used to.
  • Unexpected bills? They didn't cost me my sleep anymore.
  • Huge problems? They felt smaller, because my faith got bigger.

This peace became the ultimate proof that God was working, even when my circumstances hadn't changed yet. It wasn't something I earned through willpower. It was a gift wrapped in grace—a real finding peace in chaos moment that reshaped my entire year.
