I Am Who God Says I Am

“But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12

For the longest time, I didn't know who I was.

Growing up, validation was a language my parents did not speak. They hardly recognized any good in me. That absence of praise created a craving for attention that I suffered in silence. No matter how hard I tried to achieve things, the bar was always moved just out of reach. I was never enough for them.

To protect my heart, I retreated. I tried to educate myself, burying my nose in books and finding solace in solitude. In that quietness, I felt secure in my own little world because, in the pages of a book, I didn’t have to be someone else. I could just be me.

But the moment I stepped out of that safe haven, the mask had to go back on. I became the person I portrayed in my imagination—a character written to please the audience around me. Pretending is exhausting. It is emotionally draining to constantly scan the room to see who people want you to be. I hated that I couldn't stand up for myself. I became a people pleaser, swallowing things that didn't fit my soul just to keep the peace.

The Band-Aid Ripped Off

God heals, but sometimes the healing process isn't a gentle soothing balm; sometimes, it is harsh. Sometimes, He has to break a bone to reset it correctly. The wound I had was huge, and I had no choice but to heal it before it became a cancer that consumed my life.

The final, most painful band-aid was ripped off when my husband passed away.

For years, my identity had been wrapped up in being "someone's wife." It was a title I felt safe hiding behind. It gave me status. Suddenly, that identity shifted. The status was gone. I was still a mother, yes, but standing there with no job and no spouse, I realized I had absolutely no idea who I was.

It took a long time to adjust to that cold reality. The grief was heavy, but the loss of identity was disorienting. I was trying to rebuild my life and find myself in the absolute mess of it all. I couldn't comprehend how the death of one person could hit the reset button on my entire existence.

The Miracle of Identity

But this is where the miracle happened. In the middle of that void, God showed me who I am in His eyes. He showed me that no matter what is stripped away from me on earth, I remain His daughter — and that truth became my identity in Christ.

That is a status that will never change.

God gently touched my heart and whispered, "You are not defined by your roles. You are defined by My love."

I realized that the titles I hold are temporary. The pressure I carry does not define me. My past mistakes and failures are just that—in the past. The expectations of others can be replaced, but His word cannot, and through it I learned to anchor myself in identity in Christ.

When people label me, or when the world says "no" to me but "yes" to others, I now have a truth to stand on. I tell myself : I am chosen. I am loved. I am called. I am forgiven. I am enough. I am God's daughter.

This isn't a confidence I built with my own hands. This is an identity God restored — an identity in Christ that cannot be shaken. He took the broken, tired, self-doubting version of me and reminded me of the woman He created from the very beginning: Worthy.

Seen. Known. Loved. And today—I choose to walk in that identity.
